Hilary
wins Lausanne 1/4 marathon
After
a couple months of good endurance training, Hilary tested
herself on the roads of Lausanne in a 1/4 marathon and successfully
defended her title from 2007.
Hilary
explains that although good base training is her focus at
this time of year, competitions are still valuable.
"Eventhough
I'm training hard and running a lot of miles right now, it's
good to jump into a race and see where you're at and remind
the body what it's like to push hard," says Hilary. "I
was a bit sick with a head cold coming into this race so I
wasn't as excited as normal, but once I got in there I had
a lot of fun and was able to run a decent race."
Hilary
cover the 1/4 marathon distance in 34:38, over half a minute
ahead of the next female competitor. But she explains it wasn't
until the last 2km that she took the lead.
"This
race starts a bit downhill so people go out like crazy, but
I held back and tried to run smart. I was in about 5th at
half way and finally passed the first girl with about 2km
left. Those last few kilometres were definitely challenging."
In just
under a week Hilary will leave for a training camp in Ethiopia
where she'll test herself out at 2500m+ with other athletes
from across Europe and Ethiopia. From there she'll join team
Canada in Tokyo for the Chiba Ekiden on November 24th.
