2009 - Corrida Bulloise, Bulle, Switzerland
Hilary places 7th among strong competitors in Bulle
Upholding its elite standards, the 2009 Corrida Bulloise proved
to be every bit as competitive as past years. International
athletes from three continents competed in this year’s
race where people lined the streets to cheer on some top athletes.
In the women’s race, athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia,
Germany, Czech, Canada and Switzerland maneuvered each of
the ten loops in the small Swiss village of Bulle. The race
for medals was between athletes from the continent of Africa,
with Jane Muia of Kenya taking the win in 19:45 and two Ethiopian
women following close behind.
Hilary took the race out hard but could not match the pace
of the lead pack, but battled well with the women in the next
group to finish 7th overall in 21:10, which is 40 seconds
faster than the last time she raced this course in 2007.
“I was really excited to race today and went after it
a bit too hard too early. I suffered a lot in the middle laps
and lost some time because of it. But I dug in pretty hard
in the last 3 laps to stay with a big group and was able to
get by them all in the end. It was a tough race but a good
wakeup call at this time of year and I’m pleased with
where I’m at right now,” said Hilary after the
race.
Next on the agenda for Hilary is Geneva Escalade on Dec. 5,
which is famous for its hilly, cobblestone course in Old Town
Geneva. This year’s race will feature many top competitors
including 2009 New York City Marathon women’s winner
Deratu Tulu.
