19, 2009 - Tough race in Carson
With a
great line up of athletes set to start in Carson, it was looking
like an ideal opportunity to open the season. Unfortunately,
the race didn't go as planned for Stellingwerff who suffered
some injury problems leading into the race.
"In
my last workout before the race I strained my calf and achilles,
which wasn't super serious, but enough to stop me from running
for the next couple days," said Hilary.
After
resting the injury for a couple days she said it felt better
and thus made the decision to race, but perhaps should have
waited a few more days.
"It's
always a tough decision not to race especially when you know
you have good training behind you, but hopefully I can get
myself together and have a good rest of the season."
Overall,
results were quite mixed in Carson due to strong winds and
the fact that it was most athletes' first race of the season.
The women's 1500m was very slow and tacticle, passing 800m
in 2:21. The last 300m resulted in a mad dash to the finish
with the entire field of 15 runners battling it out. In the
end, Jamaca's Kenia Sinclair broke the tape in 4:13.16.
