Success among top level field at Escalade
Both the
atmosphere and competition were at high levels Saturday afternoon
in Geneva at the Course de l'Escalade, which roughly translates
in English to a course that goes up. And it did just that
as it wound around the old town centre that was packed full
with screaming fans.
The women's
elite race had over 300 participants, but was separated at
the front with around 30 international level runners who could
battle for the prize purse that would be divided among the
top 15 finishers. In this top field were women from Kenya,
Ethiopia, Russia, Switzerland, Hungary, and Canada. Hilary
was up against many talented women from previous races over
the last few weeks.
"From
what I had heard about this race, they bring in a lot of very
good runners from all over. So, I knew I'd be facing the toughest
competition so far this season, but I was excited for the
challenge because I've been improving each race."
The 4.780km
race was a very hilly double-loop course with an elevation
change of nearly 100m per loop and several hair-pin turns,
all to be negotiated on the old cobblestone streets. The elite
women made it an exciting race as they were packed together
throughout most of the course. It only spread out in the last
kilometer where Kenya's Caroline Chepkwony was the first to
cross the line in 15:16. But the others were not far behind.
Hilary finished in 6th place at 15:45 and only 8 seconds from
third place.
"I
was really happy with my effort today," said Hilary after
the race. "I think the hilly course played to my advantage
because I'm more of a speedy or powerful runner so I can use
this power to sprint up the hills and use my speed going down."
Escalade
is known for it's energitic atmosphere and it did not disappoint
this year. "This was one of the most exciting road races
I've ever run," said Hilary. "There were people
along the entire course screaming, which was so motivating
for me. I really have to give the spectators credit for running
their own races earlier in the day and then spilling out more
energy for us -- it was really amazing!"
Hilary
will finish off the Fall racing season with one more road
race in Sion next weekend.
