Hilary
opens season with a win in Spain
With the
tricky weather conditions of May, Spain seemed like the best
bet for warm temperatures for early season racing, which is
one of the reasons Hilary chose the meet in Herrera to open
the season.
"I
figured going to Spain was the best chance for good weather
at this time of year, which means the best chance to run fast,"
said Hilary. "My training in St. Moritz went really well
and I wanted an early race to see where I was at."
Herrera
proved to be a good place to start the season as Hilary crossed
the line in first place in a time of 4:12.71. Althought she
admits she was aiming for a faster time, the slow early pace
(4:15 through 800m) turned it into a race for the win rather
than for a fast time.
Hilary's
says her overall goals for the season are aimed around the
World Championships in Osaka, Japan, but looks forward to
gaining some good racing experience before then.
"My
main goal is to qualify and compete well in Osaka, but I still
need the qualifying time of 4:05.70 (Canada's standard) and
I hope to do that in the next few races," she says.
Next up
for Hilary is the Reebok Grand Prix in New York City on June
2.
