Disappointed
in Lausanne
Just four
days after setting a new personal best over 1500m in Paris,
Hilary took to the line again in Lausanne to race another
world-class field. But, with temperatures in the single digits
and a gusting wind, it was not the best night for racing.
Lausanne
Athletissima was ranked the 2nd best meeting in the world
last year based on criteria such as top performances, prize
money and fans. And this year, even with poor weather conditions,
a packed stadium full of fans stood on their feet and cheered
all night.
"The
atmosphere in the stadium was amazing," said Hilary.
"Even with the bad weather it was full and loud -- I
really have to hand it to the Swiss people for sticking it
out with us."
The women's
1500m featured many top athletes from Europe, Africa and North
America. In the end, Hilary's train partner Maryam Jamal lead
wire to wire and won infront of a hometown crowd in 4:03.61,
five seconds off her season best. Hilary was a disappointing
12th place in 4:10.10.
"I
think I still had a bit of the Paris race in my legs and perhaps
it just wasn't my day," said Hilary after the race. "But
I need to focus on running well even when I'm tired so this
was a good learning experience. Since all the times were relatively
slow I was most disappointed in my placing and not finishing
well. That will be something to work on."
From Lausanne,
Hilary heads straight to Canada for the National Championships
on July 13th and 14th.
