22, 2006 - New Balance Games
The
New Balance Games organizers kept their promise to host an
elite level women's mile field at this year's event. World
Championship medalists and Olympic competitors were among
the world-class field and made for an impressive early-season
race.
Hilary
Stellingwerff used this race as an early test in her preparation
for the Commonwealth Games 1500m this March. She finished
4th in 4:34.86 and was content with her performance considering
the difficult training leading in and the time of year.
"I
feel this is a good start and makes me hungry to run faster
as the season progresses and the [Commonwealth] Games comes
closer," says Stellingwerff.
Great
Britian's Hayley Tullet, 2003 World 1500m bronze medallist
outdoors, outkicked defending New Balance Games Champion and
2004 World Indoor silver medallist, Carmen Douma-Hussar (Canada),
in the final straight to take the win. Both women will also
be competiting in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne
this March. And, another fellow Canadian, Megan Metcalf ran
an outstanding season opener to finish 3rd, which puts the
Canadian women in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place spots at this meet.
Stellingwerff
travelled back to the Netherlands after the weekend and is
scheduled to race the 3000m in Stuttgart, Germany at the Spakassen
Games.
