2, 2007 - World Championships, Osaka, Japan
Hilary's
first world championships provided a good learning experience
in race tactics at the highest level. After what she describes
as an extremely nerve-racking first round, she automatically
qualfied for the semi-finals with a time of 4:09.60. However,
she finished a disappointing, but close 6th place in her semi-final,
which required 5th place to advance to the final. Read her
thoughts below.
First,
thank-you for all the messages and words of encouragment from
everyone in Canada, the U.S., Netherlands and Switzerland!
Today
I was mentally ready for anything to happen in the semi-finals:
from a fast race to a slow race. But, I was suprised with
just how slow the race actually went at this world championship
level (first 800m in 2:27, I don't think I have went that
slow for the first 800m since high school!). It was a bit
windy in the stadium tonight, and I just don't think anybody
really want to lead. As we got ready for the last lap,I knew
it was going to be who could just kick the fastest, and who
could stay out of traffic. Unfortunatley, I was a
step-back in the pack at the bell, and despite running 2:06.1
for the last 800m and 61 sec for the last lap, I finished
in 6th place- one spot (~0.5 sec) out of qualifying for the
final.

I
am frustrated at the outcome and how the race just played
out. But this is part of championship racing and sport. I
know I will take this great experience with me in my quest
for running at the Olympics next year. I know I am in great
shape right now, so I will race at least a couple of more
times this season and will be trying to go after a new personal
best (see upcoming races below). (NOTE: there will
be a full report, with photos coming soon)
