Wake
up call in NYC
Hot and
humid weather made for challenging conditions in New York
City for the Reebok Grand Prix. But, the enthusiatic crowd
and energetic atmosphere helped push athletes to their limits
on Saturday night.
The women's
1500m field was top-notch, including some the best North Americans,
as well as other international athletes with strong credentials
-- 75 per cent of the field ranks top-40 in the world.
Going
into the race Hilary was eager to run a fast time and beat
as many across the line as possible. "I knew I was in
good shape and I was really focused on trying to run fast,"
said Hilary. "When the gun went off I got off the line
fast, but maybe a bit too fast for where I'm at right now."
Hilary
split the first 400m in a pace that would lead to a sub-4min.
1500m, which is a major goal for her, but she admits it is
too early in the season for her to go out this quick. "It
was a bit of a shock to my body and over my limit. I think
it affected the rest of my race as it was downhill from there,"
said Hilary after the race.
Hilary
finished in a disappointing 10th position with 4:14.09 . Fellow
Canadian, Malindi Elmore took the win in a season best of
4:07.01.
"The
nature of the sport is that there are good and bad races.
I try to really enjoy the good ones and not dwell on the bad
ones. I feel like I'm pretty fit right now and looking forward
to a strong season ahead."
Next up
for Hilary is Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway on June 15th.
